Casual vs. Hardcore? ARC Raiders Leaks New China Test Modes | A Testing Ground for the West?

Raiders Studios has launched a test for the Chinese version of ARC Raiders, giving Chinese players the opportunity to experience game content yet to be seen even by Western players. Two new map conditions, Rebellion Incident and Double King (or Queen), have been revealed to have made a stunning debut in this test, sparking heated discussions on social media.

Rebellion Incident

The developer's success stems from its precise balance between PvE and PvP, where every encounter between players can escalate into a fierce battle. Rebellion Incident is a low-difficulty, high-resource Map Condition where all players start as friendly characters.

Initially, players cannot harm each other, but can choose to betray. After betraying, you can kill anyone, but you will be marked with a red light, and the map will show a location where rebels are present. From this point on, betrayal becomes an openly acceptable act, no longer requiring concealment, which subverts traditional gameplay.

Therefore, in the event of betrayal, friendly players can unite to hunt down the traitor. This mode lowers the game's barrier to entry and satisfies players' psychological need for safety. Some call it a map mode that PvE players dream of, while others complain that it's not pure enough.

However, it's worth noting that the international version still uses the high-risk mode, while the Chinese version disables automatic damage between players; attacking other players can only be done through active betrayal, breaking the PvPvE principle. The main purpose of this modification is to protect players and prevent them from dying too quickly, thus reducing the game experience. Therefore, the risks faced by human hunters are greatly reduced.

However, to maintain game balance, the resources within the map have also increased, compensating for the reduced playability due to lower combat risk. Therefore, this map condition can be said to be specifically designed for beginners and pure PvE players, leaning more towards pursuit than raiding.

Double King (or Queen)

Meanwhile, another map condition called Double King (or Queen) is also being tested concurrently. Unlike Rebellion Incident, the game difficulty is significantly increased under this condition.

Under these conditions, two boss enemies will spawn simultaneously - a Queen and a Matriarch - whose attacks are already feared by many players. Compared to regular map conditions, defeating bosses in Double King yields significantly more ARC Raiders items. Your squad will not only have to contend with a single major threat but will also be forced to traverse the map while battling two main bosses.

Players know that even challenging a single boss is incredibly difficult, demanding strong teamwork, gear strength, and mental fortitude. Two bosses in the same area simultaneously? This is pure hardcore gameplay - suitable only for battle-hardened teams. This could encourage more cooperative gameplay and potentially lead to the emergence of more PvE modes.

Besides the two highly anticipated new map conditions, Chinese players have revealed that this test version also includes a Safe Zone: a unique new area where players gain a sturdy shield and recover their health within a limited time. It also adds some new consumables: healing grenades and sulfuric acid grenades—grenades that inflict continuous healing and damage over time, potentially playing a crucial role in prolonged battles.

Why test in China?

International shooters entering the Chinese market typically undergo adjustments, firstly to comply with Chinese regulatory standards, and secondly for small-scale market testing. Reportedly, ARC Raiders doesn't have a large player base in China, which is precisely why the studio chose China for testing.

The smaller market size makes it the perfect testing ground for new products, as the studio doesn't need to worry about server instability. This is especially true considering Embark's ambitious plans for the game, which extend far beyond typical extraction shooters.

Furthermore, the buzz surrounding exclusive map conditions on social media is nothing new, and this may prompt the studio to accelerate content sharing between different versions. How will the developer adjust these two exclusive map conditions when introducing them to a larger Western market? This has already sparked heated discussions on international social media; let's wait and see.

Different gaming habits lead to different modes

According to data from the ARC Raiders client, most active core players have over 100 hours of playtime. They are addicted to the game because they enjoy its unpredictability and the constant tension caused by being wary of other players' ambushes.

However, Chinese players don't have the same level of online time to maintain player engagement, nor are they accustomed to the constant pressure of being on guard. Therefore, the Chinese localization has adjusted the mechanics to suit the gaming habits of Chinese players, creating a higher drop rate and a lower risk of death.

These two new map conditions offer players two different gaming experiences. Which do you prefer: the peaceful and united Rebellion Incident or the high-difficulty, high-pressure Double King? And how will this localization of ARC Raiders for the Chinese market satisfy the Western market in the future? Let's wait and see!
