College Football 27 Player Reviews: The Best Football Game Yet or Just Overrated?

EA Sports College Football 27 was officially released on July 9, 2026, and it's been half a month since then. This title is not only the third installment in CFB series since its reboot, but also the first CFB game to be released on PC.

While the game's microtransactions caused some controversy upon release, most players gave it positive reviews, with some even considering it the best football game ever.

However, a considerable number of players still offered criticism. The two sides of the debate raged on player forums.

Positive Reviews

Let's first look at the positive reviews of CFB 27:

On-field Experience

A significant number of players and review organizations believe that CFB 27's on-field feel has reached a new high for the series - smoother, more relaxed, and more realistic.

For example, the tactical adjustments on the defensive end. The game's control logic has been redesigned, replacing the directional buttons with a more intuitive right analog stick, allowing players to pre-plan defensive strategies based on the offensive formation, such as pressuring the quarterback's pass rush or executing a counter-attack.

Dynamic Weather has also received widespread acclaim. The in-game weather is no longer static; it can change in real-time during a match - light rain in the first half, clear skies in the second; or sudden strong winds affecting free kicks. This significantly increases the variability of each match.

Dynasty Mode

The improvements to Dynasty Mode are considered by CFB 27 supporters to be the most significant advancement in the game. They highly praised the introduction of Dynasty Blueprint system, believing it transforms Dynasty Mode from a simple game of winning into a complex College Football project management simulator.

Dynasty Blueprint is very rich in content. Among them, Athletic Director Expectations, Facilities & NIL, and Coach Progression are the most praised mechanisms.

Athletic Director Expectations gives each school in CFB 27 its own ethos and project priorities; Facilities & NIL requires players to attract and retain players by upgrading facilities and equipment; Coach Progression increases the game's challenge, allowing players to freely choose the coach's upgrade speed.

Atmosphere Creation

Many players believe that CFB 27's atmosphere creation is top-notch in the industry. The game not only updated the broadcast team, with Joel Klatt replacing Kirk Herbstreit to partner with Chris Fowler and coordinating with sideline reporter Holly Rowe, but also added a dedicated awards ceremony animation for Heisman Trophy.

Furthermore, players have expressed their appreciation for the game's richer storyline, stadium traditions, and pre-match announcements.

PC Mode

Of course, PC mode alone has garnered widespread praise for CFB 27. Previously, EA's sports games were only available on consoles, meaning PC players had to purchase a console to play. CFB 27 was the first time CFB games were brought to PC platform.

PC players appreciate the feel of playing games with a mouse and keyboard, and might abandon a game simply because it's not available on PC.

One player commented, "I didn't play CFB 25 or CFB 26 because they weren't released on PC. CFB 27 was released on PC, so I love this game". This is the best proof.

Negative Reviews

Of course, with positive reviews come negative ones. Here are the reasons why players don't support CFB 27:

Microtransactions

CFB 27's reviews on a well-known PC online platform are "Mostly Negative", mainly due to the recent Microtransactions issue - a large number of players flooded the game with negative reviews in protest against this mechanism. This was also the game's most serious public relations crisis since its release.

Although the developers later removed Microtransactions under pressure, some players discovered that the game's progression system had already paved the way for it.

Especially Road to Glory Skill Caps system - a design clearly borrowed from NBA 2K - seems to deliberately limit the upper limit of player attributes. Some players exchanged a large number of College Football 27 Coins for player cards, but still found the player attributes unsatisfactory.

The developers seem to have deliberately made upgrades extremely lengthy and cumbersome to entice players to pay. After all, their announcement of removing Microtransactions seems somewhat reluctant.

Teammate AI

Despite CFB 27's claim that its AI teammates are more intelligent, some players believe they are still quite stupid, which is ruining the game experience.

First, there's Offensive Line. Players have reported that offensive lines frequently ignore pass rushers, resulting in players being sacked within two seconds.

Running Backs are also not very smart. When running the ball, AI running backs don't look for gaps but instead collide with teammates or run directly into crowds, making HB Screen almost unusable.

Timing-based Catching mechanic is also widely criticized - even if the player perfectly presses the green catch bar, the receiver can still drop the ball due to slight physical contact, leading to significant frustration.

Copy-Paste Criticism

Some players believe that CFB 27 is no different from its predecessor and that only Mascot Mashup mode is worth playing.

Furthermore, Road to Glory high school segment of CFB 26 was heavily criticized, but CFB 27 simply copied this setting without fixing any issues, which angered some single-player gamers.

The above summarizes the discussions among players after the release of College Football 27. Overall, most of the negative reviews were in protest against Microtransactions, but after Microtransactions were withdrawn, the game's reputation reversed.
