In most cases, the following four equipment slots form the foundation of a character's survivability: Helmet, Chest Armor, Pants, and Boots. Therefore, you only need to focus on affixes for these slots.
Among them, in Diablo 4 Season 13, most class builds will choose Uniques or even Diablo 4 Mythic Uniques with strong offensive stats for the headgear slot, such as the extremely rare Harlequin Crest or the high-attack Ahavarion Spear of Lycander. Therefore, we will temporarily disregard headgear here.
However, when choosing affixes for the other three equipment slots, you must focus on the following three core affixes: Maximum Life, Armor, and Resistance to All Elements. These significantly increase the base stats of your equipment.
Of these three, Resistance to All Elements is the most important. This affix provides corresponding resistance bonuses to all six elements: Fire, Lightning, Physical, Cold, Poison, and Shadow.
A single Resistance to All Elements affix provides a bonus of 327 to 392 points. Assuming we take the maximum value of 392, a fully upgraded affix can provide a total resistance gain of up to 2,352 points, which is quite substantial. Therefore, make sure your equipment has this affix.
Furthermore, there's another detail. Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred added a very useful item, Horadric Cube, which allows players to use different Tuning Prisms to add to or reforge specific affix ranges.
This sounds great; however, you must be aware of a harsh reality: if you use a defensive Tuning Prism, you will never gain Resistance to All Elements, because this type of Tuning Prism can only add affixes that provide a "specific resistance to a single element," such as Fire Resistance, Cold Resistance, or Poison Resistance.
Charms affixes
Besides your equipment, you also need to pay attention to Charms system.
Most players, after assembling a complete set of Charms and activating the powerful set bonuses, neglect their build. However, if you're aiming for greater survivability, you should reforge your Charms' affixes in Horadric Cube.
This is because you can intentionally reroll for defensive affixes like "+18% Resistance to All Elements," "+10% Maximum Life," or "+15.0% Total Armor" during Charm reforging process.
However, it's crucial to note that if the base stats of your gear are low, the percentage-based benefits will be significantly reduced. Therefore, adjusting Charms is a way to increase your potential later on, while your base gear stats are fundamental.
Furthermore, here's a general tip: if you feel your build is still far from ideal, check your accessories - rings. In Diablo 4 Season 13, rings also have a chance to directly grant affixes that significantly increase life, which is extremely important for builds focused on enhancing survivability.

Endurant Faith and Temerity

With the best affix, this shield can reach 100% of your character's maximum health. If you have a large amount of affix that increases your character's base health and some form of continuous healing, it will constantly generate a powerful shield, greatly enhancing your survivability.
Furthermore, Endurant Faith and Temerity can be used simultaneously. This combination makes your character extremely difficult to kill in non-extreme conditions, allowing you to survive even the most challenging boss attacks in high-difficulty dungeons.
