The recent racing game Forza Horizon 6 has become incredibly popular, attracting many veteran Forza Horizon players and newcomers interested in racing.
One skill that is crucial, even indispensable, for both Forza Horizon 6 players and players of other racing games is drifting.
Some players who aren't good at drifting might find it difficult, frequently spinning out or going off the track. However, with the right techniques, anyone can easily master drifting.
Below, I'll guide you step-by-step on how to become a drifting master in FH6.
Choosing Right Car
Those who don't understand drifting might think they can't drift because of poor technique; in reality, they might not even have chosen right car.
In Forza Horizon 6, you can drift with any car, but the best car for drifting is definitely a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicle.
Why? Because the principle of drifting is to make the rear wheels slip while the front wheels maintain steering control. Rear-wheel drive cars perfectly fit this logic - power is delivered to rear wheels, so you only need to floor the accelerator to make the rear end slide; the front wheels are only responsible for steering and are not affected by the power.
According to guides shared by multiple players, the following cars are considered the best for drifting in FH6:
- All Formula Drift series cars: These are modified cars specifically built for drifting, equipped with perfect drift tuning, and you can start driving them directly without any modifications.
- Formula Drift #64 Forsberg Racing Nissan Z (2023)
- Formula Drift #777 Nissan 240SX (1997)
- 1989 Nissan Silvia K's
These cars can be obtained directly in the in-game Auto Show with a small amount of Forza Horizon 6 Credits, so don't miss them.
Tuning and Modification
Now that you have several good cars, the next step is to tune them to be more suitable for drifting.
First, you need to enter Garage, select the car you want to tune, and choose "Find Tunes." Search for "Drift" and use values shared by other players.
Second, in Forza Horizon 6, you can modify your car. If you decide to modify your car yourself, tire selection is crucial; you can equip your car with tires suitable for drifting.
Core Control Techniques
After setting up your car, you can now learn how to drift.
Basic Principles
First, you need to understand the principles. Drifting can be broken down into three core input controls: handbrake, footbrake, and Throttle.
Specifically, when entering a corner, pulling the handbrake while steering will instantly lock the rear wheels, causing the rear of the car to swing outwards. This is the easiest way for beginners to initiate a drift.
When drift angle is too large or the speed is too fast and you are about to lose control, lightly tapping Footbrake will help stabilize the car and allow it to continue sliding along the desired trajectory.
You also need to learn to control the throttle - if the throttle is too high, the rear of the car will overshoot, causing it to spin out; if the throttle is too low, the rear wheels will regain traction, ending the drift.

Drifting Steps
When you're completely new to drifting, you can try initiating a drift using the handbrake, ideally at speeds between 40-80 km/h:
- Step 1: Shift into 2nd or 3rd gear, and lightly apply the brakes before entering corner to shift the car's weight forward;
- Step 2: Steering and applying the handbrake: While steering towards the apex of the corner, lightly apply the handbrake for 0.5-1 second;
- Step 3: Releasing the handbrake and counter-steering: Immediately release the handbrake while simultaneously steering in the opposite direction, also known as counter-steering. During this process, you need to control the throttle, maintaining it at 30%-50% to keep the rear of the car at a sideslip angle.
- step 4: exiting the corner: When the front of the car is aligned with exit direction, gradually straighten the steering wheel while simultaneously increasing the throttle.
If you have already mastered basic drifting techniques, you can try the second drifting method: Set the transmission to Manual with clutch, and when entering the corner, do not press the accelerator, keeping the clutch depressed; at the moment you begin to drift, quickly release the clutch while simultaneously slamming on the accelerator.
Drift Line
You may have heard that the normal track driving method in Forza Horizon 6 is to enter corner on the outside, cut to inside at the apex, and exit on the outside, so-called "outside-inside-outside," but drifting line is exactly the opposite, it should be "inside-outside-inside":
- Entering corner: Stay close to inside of corner.
- In corner: Let the rear of the car swing out, the car slides sideways to outside of corner.
- Before exiting corner: Gradually reduce weight, return to inside to prepare for the next corner.
The advantage of this method is that it allows you to achieve the maximum drift angle, thus earning you more points.
Once you've mastered the principles, procedures, and lines of drifting, all that's left is practice. Find a suitable course for drift practice and practice repeatedly until you've mastered this skill.
This is my guide to drifting skills in Forza Horizon 6. First, you need to choose a good car and make appropriate adjustments. Then, practice repeatedly according to techniques I have given. I believe you will learn this skill immediately, go try it!
