Torchlight Infinite SS13 Afterlight Core Gameplay Preview | New Escort Mechanic & Hero Trait Unveiled

Torchlight Infinite SS13 Afterlight will launch globally on July 16, 2026 at 7:00 PM PDT. During the livestream on July 11th, the official team revealed all the updates for this season, covering new season gameplay, new hero traits, a new endgame challenge, a revamped Divinity Slate system, numerous talent tree adjustments, and many QoL optimizations.

Below, I will select some key elements from a practical perspective for explanation.

Core Gameplay: Escort the Coffin

Torchlight Infinite SS13 Afterlight Core Gameplay Preview | New Escort Mechanic & Hero Trait Unveiled

As shown in the first official trailer, the core mechanic of SS13 is the escort gameplay. Players will encounter an unnamed coffin in Netherrealm; lighting the lantern will initiate a funeral ceremony. The player's task is to escort the coffin across the map while defeating enemies attracted by the lantern.

This mechanic demands extremely high map clearing speed. The lantern color provides real-time feedback on player performance:

  • Green: Ideal kill speed, maximized rewards
  • Yellow: Slower pace, overcrowded battlefield
  • Red: Must prioritize clearing enemies attacking the coffin, otherwise progress is impossible

Special events or golden enemies may randomly trigger during the escort. Players also have the opportunity to escort special coffins, which have a tighter time limit, higher monster density, and more kills, but also richer rewards.

Since the escort mechanic's benefits are directly linked to map clearing speed, it is recommended that players prioritize builds with high map clearing efficiency during the early stages. Summoning, projectile, and high AOE damage classes will have a significant advantage.

New Nether King's Divinity Progress System

Nether King's Divinity is a craftable Divinity in Torchlight Infinite that can be placed on a Divinity Slate. Divinity Slates come in various unique shapes, allowing players to embed Nether King Divine Remnant into their talent grid and unlock a variety of new talents.

These Divinity Slates can be rolled for very powerful and unique mods that will revolutionize your existing build. It's certain that this will become one of the core aspects of mid-to-late game gear crafting and build optimization in SS13.

Therefore, it's recommended that you monitor the market price of Divinity Slates as early as possible; stockpiling them early can significantly save on Torchlight Infinite Flame Elementium expenses later on.

Tide Whisper Selena: Dance of the Deep

Torchlight Infinite SS13 Selena New Hero Trait

One of the biggest highlights of SS13 is Selena's new hero trait - Dance of the Deep. Selena is the first dual-form hero in Torchlight Infinite. Her original trait allowed her to envelop her abilities in bubbles in Bard mode, casting spells while moving and creating tides; in Loud Song mode, she could stand in the tides and deal even more damage. The new trait completely changes her combat style.

Terra Skill Adjustments

Core Terra skills are now always cast centered on the player and follow the player's movement; non-core Terra skills deal no damage; Terra skill range increased by 20%, and additional Terra skill damage increased by 20% to 40%.

This transforms her combat style from fixed-point casting to highly mobile, mobile casting. Players need to use positioning to cover more enemies with Terra skills, significantly increasing the skill ceiling and the overall enjoyment.

New Terra Skills

SS13 introduces several new Terra skills to complement Selena's new traits:

  • Terra Thornfield: Deals physical damage per second, plus additional physical damage based on maximum health
  • Tide Well: A hit-based Terra skill that creates a water vortex at the enemy's feet
  • Fallen Star: Summons a comet to crash down
  • Storm Field: Triggers lightning that can affect both the player and summoned units
  • Nether Grasp: An erosion skill that increases the damage and range of Supported Skills

Endgame Challenge

TLI SS13 introduces the new Endgame Challenge mode - Divine Ascent, officially replacing the previously unpopular City Defense mode.

In Divine Ascent, players must clear the map, defeat monsters, or complete random events within a 3-minute time limit to fill the challenge progress bar. Once the bar is full, a level boss is unlocked, which must be defeated within the time limit to advance to the next level. Rewards increase with each level.

The rewards for Divine Ascent remain the same as City Defense - a Legendary Battle Pack selection box. Players will also automatically convert any City Defense tokens they previously held into tokens for the new mode without loss.

System and Balance Changes

Lunaria Adjustments

The Lunaria mechanic from the previous season has been optimized in SS13: it will receive a new talent tree, supporting more gameplay options. Harps required to access Lunaria are now limited to Legendary quality, significantly reducing the difficulty for players to obtain them. Lunaria is now integrated into Void Chart, allowing players to specify the mods they want to farm.

Trade House

Torchlight Infinite SS13 adds price lookup buttons to item information in the Netherrealm, Talent, Gear crafting, and PrismCrafting interfaces. Players can now directly view prices from these interfaces and jump to the Trade House.

The developers have also optimized the quick purchase experience in Trade House. Quick purchase is now only available for specific item types. After enabling quick purchase and selecting price filters, clicking on an item that matches the filters will complete the purchase immediately.

Bing's Adjustments

Bing was previously considered to have overly complex mechanics, and SS13 has made some adjustments. His bombs now have a chance to spawn 3 additional spare bombs when they deal damage. This spawn chance is now 35% of the bomb's critical hit chance, and the extra damage from the spare bombs is reduced by 20% (from 60%).

This means he can now focus almost entirely on offensive projectile builds, with a significant damage increase. Therefore, this is good news for players who want to try Bing as a starting character.

In short, Torchlight Infinite SS13 is far from a minor patch. From the escort gameplay that requires running and fighting, to Selena's complete overhaul of stationary DPS, and the newly added endgame challenge, this update encourages players to be active and fast in almost every aspect. The lights are already on, and the coffin awaits your escort. Good luck with your progression, and see you in the new season.
